Our Chapter History
The Irvine Chapter of National Charity League started with Dee Parker, Lynda King, and Carol Liitschwager contacting their friends with daughters in Jr. High and High School. Dee was a member of NCL, Inc. in Newport Beach and Lynda had been involved with NCL, inc. in Pasadena. They wanted Irvine to have their own dedicated chapter also.
Organizational meetings were held at Jane Martin’s house. Jane was in charge of putting together the structure. Ellen Hill, Connie Hauck, Gwen Byrd, Deanna Rankin, Janet McNeil and Lynda King were also on the first Board of Directors.
The first Senior Recognition was held at Tivoli Gardens in Laguna Beach. Janet Liitschwager and Tiffany King were the first Seniors to be honored. The next year, the Senior Recognition was held at the Marriott Hotel in Newport Beach.
Our Chapter adopted Irvine Meals on Wheels as its primary philanthropy in 1982. The City provided the food, and the Chapter handled all of the administrative elements of the program.
Our chapter has served over 1 million meals to homebound Irvine seniors and donated over $280,000 to Meals on Wheels since 1982.
In 2009, we were recognized by the Irvine City Council with a Commendation for community service, and again in 2013, in celebration of 30 years of community service through Irvine Meals on Wheels.
Our chapter completed over 568 drives in 2017/18. We also gave over 8,000 hours in service to the 22 other philanthropies we support.
